History

Santorini (Thera) is the southernmost island of the Cyclades island complex in the Aegean Sea. In antiquity it was called Stroggyli (the round one), Kallisti (the most beautiful one), and Thera, after its first ruler. The thirteenth century name Santorini, originates from the Venetian name for St. Irene, the island’s patron. Santorini today is essentially the relic of perhaps the biggest volcanic eruption in recorded history.

Around 1500 B.C. the Minoan eruption caused the submergence of a big part of central Santorini, destroying the original island. According to a popular theory, Santorini inspired the legend of the lost Atlantis.Nowadays Santorini is one of the most sought out tourist destinations in the world. In 2011 BBC .Travel included Santorini in both its «best islands of the world» and «honeymoons for sun-seekers» lists, and with good reason. Santorini consists of a spectacular feast of colours: the burnt orange of the caldera cliff-sides, the sparkling white of the traditional cubical houses, and the deep blue of the sea and the churches’ domes.

There are lots of sights to see and things to experience in Santorini. You can visit the Prehistoric and Archaeological museums and the Minoan site of Akrotiri; swim in Santorini’s beautiful beaches with the warmed from the lava rocks water; stroll in Fira, Imerovigli and Oia; go hiking or sailing; taste the delectable traditional cuisine and the renowned local wines; and enjoy the island’s vibrant nightlife. The idyllic village of Imerovigli, at the highest point of the Caldera, with its stunning sea view, will leave you utterly and irrevocably charmed. Santorini is the ultimate romantic destination.
